Friend’O Friday – Chester

College baby.

College baby.

I have some incredible friends and I think I’m going to start using my Friday posts to talk about them. This Friend’O Friday belongs to one of my best and oldest brohams. His name is Jason Groves (but we call him Chester… or variations on that name) and he lives in Basalt, CO. We grew up in Altus together and a few months ago I flew out to do some fly fishing and camping with him. We tore it up for 3 days on the Frying Pan, slayed some trout and had one of the most amazing camping experiences ever. Below are some pics from that trip. Chet practices law for WATERLAW and is basically kicking ass in all area’s of life. Love you dude. He married his high school sweetheart Shayla and she’s a bad ace graphic designer. I’m already jonesing to get back out there for another trip.

Oblivion Soundtrack

So the movie has gotten mixed reviews which I can understand (though I liked it). And yes I might be biased but I love this score. Two of my good buddies worked their asses off on it and it payed off. Joe Trapanese was a co-composer with Anthony Gonzalez and Satoshi Noguchi mixed it. If you haven’t heard it you can check it out on Spotify. It’s intense when it needs to be intense and delicate when it needs to be delicate. It’s well balanced and incredibly emotional. There are a lot of great scores that don’t really play well outside of the movie. This is not one of those scores. I listen to it all the time.

Download the score HERE from iTunes or stream it from Spotify.

Son Lux

For those of you into the super creative, you’re welcome. I’ve been listening to this album non stop since I met Ryan (AKA “Son Lux”) at a concert a couple of weeks ago. A mutual friend of ours told me I had to check it out. I did and I love it. Download it through iTunes or check it out on Spotify.

Even more impressive is he wrote this entire album from start to finish in a month. You can read or listen to the NPR interview with Ryan on the making of this album HERE.

By far my new favorite Outdoor/Performance Clothing Company. I went to Jackson Hole, WY for a few days last week, but before I did, I needed to get a jacket. I realized when going through my closet that I didn’t really have an insulated jacket for winter. In JH, a jean jacket won’t do it. So I stopped by the Aether Outpost on Melrose before heading out. I first went to the Outpost with my buddy Spencer Nikosey (KILLSPENCER) last winter when he was in the market for a jacket himself. I had seen Aether stuff on Uncrate before but he’s the one who really turned me on to them. I found out that you don’t need an appointment anymore so I dropped by and Melissa was there to help me out. She’s the best by the way. It’s always refreshing to meet really cool people that dig their job. Anyway, I picked up the Alto and a Slub Hoodie. Their warranty is incredible so I think the investment is well worth it. Their gear is made to last. It was perfect for Jackson and Yellowstone but I’ll also be able to rock that jacket in LA when it gets a little cooler. If you’re in the LA area you should stop by the Outpost just to see their space. It’s pretty incredible. Thanks Melissa and everyone else at Aether for the hospitality and for the great gear!!

Acido Dorado

I spent the weekend in Joshua Tree with my shorty and two of our best friends, Chris and Sarah Rhoads. It was a little artistic get away. We stayed at this incredible house called Acido Dorado.  The house was designed Robert Stone and it’s truly a work of art. Robert lives in LA and built another house that’s is just a stone’s throw away from Acido Dorado and it’s called Rosa Muerta. This house jet black and a little scary at night. I had one of the best, most memorable weekends I’ve had in a long time. Can’t wait to do it again!!

I’ll be using some of the images that Chris and Sarah took for a new site I’ll be launching in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for that as well as the Shades of Jackson album release!!

Anthony Hamilton’s “Back to Love”

I’m so excited to be a part of Anthony Hamilton’s new album “Back to Love”!! I saw on Twitter this morning that the album came out so I downloaded it instantly. I interned for Arista records in NYC when I was 19. I bumped into a guy in the elevator who was the nicest person I had met since I’d been there.  I asked my boss who he was and he said, “That’s Anthony Hamilton”. I asked how long he’d worked for Arista and my boss said that he was a new artist who’s first album was about to come out. I grabbed one of the samplers with 4 or 5 tunes on it from “Comin’ From Where I’m From” and listened to it obsessively until the full album came out. I was a huge fan instantly. I got the chance to tell Anthony that story at the Grammy’s in 2006 and he and I have been good friends ever since.  When I’ve had some down times he’s been the first one on multiple occasions to lift me up in prayer with a thoughtful email.  I feel very blessed to be a small part of this album. Andre Harris produced the track I played guitar on called “Broken Man”. Download the album from iTunes today so we can take it to Platinum status!!
